Hermes Kelly Mini Sellier 20 Gold epsom leather bag gold hardware
Hermes Kelly bags are based on a saddle bag that was first created in 1892. Because of its high handle, the bag was known as a Haut a courroies at the time. In 1923, Emile-Maurice Hermes and Ettore Bugatti collaborated to create a purse for Hermes’ wife Julie. It was simple and elegant, and it was designed to fit through a car door exactly.
Emile-Maurice’s son-in-law, Robert Dumas, designed the Sac a depeches in 1928. This bag was the first ‘handbag,’ and it was used to carry vital papers and news. The Hermes Sac a depeches was worn with style by eminent poets and politicians such as JFK and the Duke of Windsor.
Grace Kelly, the gorgeous film star, is the inspiration for the Kelly purse. Several Hermes accessories were purchased by Hitchcock’s costume designer for the filming of “To Catch a Thief”. The actress was enamoured with her new Hermes bag. She held the bag up to shield herself from the flashing paparazzi bulbs when she was pregnant for her husband Prince Rainer of Monaco, in 1956.
One photograph was featured on the cover of Life Magazine. As a result, the bag became known as the Grace bag, and it was renamed the Kelly bag.
Princess Grace’s pictured handbag was loaned from the Monaco palace archives and displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in April 2010, alongside other important wardrobe items held by the princess. Hermès now offers 32 different handbag styles, but the Kelly remains the most popular.
